Fired the local club's free buy tonight because it had a bunch of insane added value, a total of 5 free added seats. Early bird hot seat raffle, end of late reg hot seat raffle, high hand, final table cold hand, and a ticket based raffle for anyone who rebought or added on.
My starting stack cost me $10 (dealer appreciation, gotta show them love!) and I was there in time for the early bird which had like 27 people in it. Seats are worth $400, so there's $15 equity for free. Whiffed it.
Ran my stack up to like 4x starting (the most you can buy at one time if you're rebuying) and then we went card dead. In normal circumstances I would have found a spot to get it in before the end of late registration, but as I intended on playing cash and not rebuying, I figured there was some equity in trying to make it to break and getting a shot at another seat.
We found our way to break and we're in there with a chance at another seat with 31 others. Hello $12.50 in more added equity. We Whiff.
After break we find some spots to get our chips in, get a couple small doubles and still had a shortish stack. We jam with A4s and roughly ten bigs. It goes 3bet and call behind us and we're up against QQ and KQ. We find our ace on the river, one of only two clean ones left, and get the triple up. Now we have street poker chips.
We bob, weave, jab, and shove our way to the final table! Time for a 10 way cold hand where the winner gets a free seat. $40 more in free equity! We Whiff.
We continue to fight and attack where we can, we find a huge pot and score an elimination with 7 left, meaning the next eliminated will take $54 cash and the remaining five will each score a seat. I quickly fold my cards utg and before I can even finish stacking my chips I hear "all in" and "call" from the dealer next to me and the flip goes in favor of the table as the bubble is burst and "payout" is called.
I love going into these freebies with a $10 only approach. I find joy in hearing players say "I need third place to break even." When I'm literally 400mg deep in gummy land and happy to be there.
